This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to divide polynomials by binomials using factorization.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand that shared factors in the quotient of polynomials can be canceled provided we restrict the domain,
- simplify the quotient of two fully factored polynomials that share roots,
- simplify the quotient of two unfactored polynomials that share roots by factoring,
- solve real-world problems involving the quotient of polynomials where factors cancel out,
- find unknown coefficients or polynomials using a given identity involving the quotient of polynomials.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- operations on polynomials,
- polynomial division by monomials,
- factoring quadratics,
- factoring polynomials by finding the greatest common factor of their terms.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- division by quadratics or above,
- algebraic division and synthetic division,
- the remainder theorem,
- graphing polynomials.
