This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to divide polynomials by binomials using factorization.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that shared factors in the quotient of polynomials can be canceled provided we restrict the domain,
  • simplify the quotient of two fully factored polynomials that share roots,
  • simplify the quotient of two unfactored polynomials that share roots by factoring,
  • solve real-world problems involving the quotient of polynomials where factors cancel out,
  • find unknown coefficients or polynomials using a given identity involving the quotient of polynomials.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • operations on polynomials,
  • polynomial division by monomials,
  • factoring quadratics,
  • factoring polynomials by finding the greatest common factor of their terms.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • division by quadratics or above,
  • algebraic division and synthetic division,
  • the remainder theorem,
  • graphing polynomials.
