Lesson Plan: Modeling Ratios
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use ratio to describe the relationship between two quantities and express this in words.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand that ratio is a comparison of one value to another,
- compare values using words and phrases (e.g., For every …, there is/are …),
- express part–part and part–whole ratios in words.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- using multiplication facts and division facts to compare the relative sizes of quantities (e.g., 20 is ten times bigger than 2),
- using multiplication to solve correspondence problems,
- solving problems involving unequal sharing and/or grouping.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- ratio notation ,
- writing ratios as fractions,
- equivalent ratios,
- simplifying ratios.
