Objectives
Students will be able to
- recall the four blood groups (A, B, AB, and O),
- explain how classification of blood groups depends on the antigens and antibodies found in the blood,
- describe how blood groups and Rhesus factors are inherited,
- state the importance of blood groups in determining paternity, blood transfusions, and studying evolution,
- explain the different possibilities of blood transfusions between humans,
- explain how blood groups are determined by agglutination,
- explain the importance of the Rhesus factor in blood transfusions and pregnancy.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- basic principles of inheritance,
- dominant and recessive alleles.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- details of performing blood transfusions.
