Lesson Plan: Batteries and Fuel Cells Chemistry
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe and compare the production of electrical energy from batteries and fuel cells.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe the production of electrical energy from simple cells and hydrogen–oxygen fuel cells,
- explain how a chemical cell produces different voltages when using different electrodes,
- evaluate and compare the use of different batteries in comparison to fuel cells.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- simple electrolysis involving an electrolytic cell with a dc current,
- typical simple half-equations occurring at electrodes during electrolysis,
- oxidation and reduction in terms of electron transfer.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the effect of changing electrodes on the potential difference of the cell quantitatively,
- electrode potentials,
- calculation of cell potentials.
