Lesson Plan: Laws of Exponents

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • multiply two powers by adding exponents, 𝑥×𝑥=𝑥,
  • divide two powers by subtracting exponents, 𝑥𝑥=𝑥,
  • evaluate powers with an exponent of 0,
  • evaluate expressions involving powers,
  • compare expressions involving powers.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • operations on integers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • negative bases or exponents,
  • expressions involving non-rational numbers,
  • noninteger powers.
