Lesson Plan: Image Production Using Lenses Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define the focal length of a lens, describing how light passing through convex and concave lenses forms real and virtual images.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize that a real image is produced by converging light rays,
  • recognize that a virtual image is produced by diverging light rays,
  • recognize that concave lenses only produce virtual images,
  • recognize that for convex lenses incident parallel light rays produce a real image of an object at a greater distance from the lens than the focal length of the lens,
  • recognize that for convex lenses incident parallel light rays produce a virtual image of an object at a lesser distance from the lens than the focal length of the lens,
  • recognize that the image produced by a convex lens is smaller than the object for objects at distances from the lens greater than twice the focal length of the lens,
  • recognize that the image produced by a convex lens is larger than the object for objects at distances from the lens less than twice the focal length of the lens,
  • recognize that the image produced by a convex lens is the same size as the object for objects at distances from the lens equal to twice the focal length of the lens,
  • recognize that a real image produced by a converging lens is inverted relative to the object imaged,
  • recognize that a virtual image produced by a convex lens or a concave lens has the same vertical orientation as the object imaged.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • definitions of the locations of focal points for convex and concave lenses.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the use of the formula 1=1+1focallengthobjectdistanceimagedistance.
