Lesson Plan: The Fundamental Forces Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the properties of the four fundamental forces and which particles interact via each force.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall that the gluon is the particle that mediates the strong interaction,
  • recall what the symbol for a gluon is,
  • recall that the photon is the particle that mediates the electromagnetic interaction,
  • recall what the symbol for a photon is,
  • recall that the 𝑊 and 𝑍 bosons are the particles that mediate the weak interaction,
  • recall what the symbols for the 𝑊 and 𝑍 bosons are,
  • recall that the 𝑊 and the 𝑊 are antiparticles of each other,
  • recall that the strong nuclear force is the strongest of the four interactions,
  • recall that gravity is the weakest of the four interactions,
  • order the four interactions by their relative strength,
  • recall the approximate range of the strong force,
  • recall that the range of electromagnetism and gravity is infinite,
  • recall whether the strong nuclear force, electromagnetic force, and gravity are attractive or repulsive,
  • recall that the gluon, photon, and 𝑊 and 𝑍 bosons are all the types of bosons,
  • recall that the strong nuclear force is what holds the nuclei of atoms together,
  • recall that the weak nuclear force causes nuclear decay.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • what a photon is,
  • the names, basic properties, and symbols for all of the fermions in the standard model,
  • the classical electromagnetic force and the classical gravitational force.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • gravitons,
  • the range of the weak force,
  • whether the weak force would be classified as attractive or repulsive,
  • the eight types of gluons,
  • color charge,
  • mixed states,
  • supersymmetry,
  • Majorana particles,
  • spin,
  • Feynman diagrams.
