Lesson Plan: Sound Waves Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe sound wave propagation, define “audible frequencies,” and explain the applications of reflections of sound waves.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify a wavelength of a sound wave from an image of its compression and rarefaction regions,
  • apply the formula speed = frequency × wavelength to sound waves,
  • use knowledge of the speeds of sound waves in different materials to show how reflected sound waves are used to measure distances between objects,
  • identify the frequency range of sound waves audible to humans.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • longitudinal waves,
  • the formula speed = frequency × wavelength,
  • the law of reflection.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • acoustic impedance.
