Lesson Plan: Position and Motion

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe an object’s position and motion.


Students will be able to

  • define the terms position and relative position,
  • describe the positions and relative positions of objects,
  • define the term direction,
  • define the terms motion and relative motion,
  • describe the motion of an object using distance, time, direction, and speed,
  • describe speed as a measure of how quickly or slowly an object travels,
  • perform calculations involving speed, distance, and time.


Students should already be familiar with

  • words used to describe relative positions, such as in front of, behind, above, and below,
  • using rulers to measure distances,
  • multiplying and dividing whole numbers within the multiplication tables up to 10×10.


Students will not cover

  • balanced and unbalanced forces.
