This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the quotient and remainder when polynomials are divided by linear polynomials using long division.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • divide a polynomial by a linear polynomial using long division where
    • the remainder is zero,
    • the remainder is nonzero and find the remainder in this case,
  • use the result after a long division of a polynomial 𝑓(𝑥) with no remainder to
    • write the polynomial in the form 𝑓(𝑥)=(𝑝𝑥+𝑞)𝑎𝑥+𝑏𝑥+𝑐,
    • fully factor the polynomial if one of the factors is quadratic,
    • find the solutions to 𝑓(𝑥)=0.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • factoring quadratic equations.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the factor theorem.
