This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to interpret augmented matrices and represent systems of linear equations as an augmented matrix.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • find the augmented matrix (𝐴𝐵) when given matrix 𝐴 and matrix 𝐵,
  • represent a system of linear equations as an augmented matrix,
  • understand the terms coefficient matrix, variable matrix, and constant matrix,
  • relate the order of an augmented matrix with the order of the corresponding coefficient matrix,
  • relate the order of an augmented matrix with the number of equations and the number of variables in the corresponding system of linear equations.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • systems of linear equations,
  • multiplying an 𝑛×𝑛 matrix by an 𝑛×1 matrix.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • performing elementary row operations,
  • finding the rank of a matrix,
  • solving systems of linear equations.
