Objectives
Students will be able to
- use one-step function machines to
- input a number into a function machine and calculate an output,
- work out the function rule from a set of inputs and outputs,
- calculate an input from the function rule and the output,
- use two-step function machines to
- input a number into a function machine and calculate an output,
- calculate an input from the function rules and the output,
- solve more complex problems, such as replacing a two-step function machine with a one-step function machine, choosing the correct function rules for a two-step function machine from a set of multiple choices, or calculating an output for a three-step function machine.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the four basic operations on numbers,
- negative integers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- algebraic notation,
- function notation,
- rational numbers.
