Lesson Plan: Function Machines Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use function machines to find the function rule and evaluate direct and inverse operations.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use one-step function machines to
    • input a number into a function machine and calculate an output,
    • work out the function rule from a set of inputs and outputs,
    • calculate an input from the function rule and the output,
  • use two-step function machines to
    • input a number into a function machine and calculate an output,
    • calculate an input from the function rules and the output,
  • solve more complex problems, such as replacing a two-step function machine with a one-step function machine, choosing the correct function rules for a two-step function machine from a set of multiple choices, or calculating an output for a three-step function machine.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the four basic operations on numbers,
  • negative integers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • algebraic notation,
  • function notation,
  • rational numbers.
