This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the area of a trapezoid given its height and the lengths of its bases.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- identify the parallel sides, the legs, and the height of a trapezoid,
- calculate the area of a trapezoid given the lengths of its parallel sides and its height,
- calculate the area of a trapezoid in a real-life context,
- calculate the missing lengths in a trapezoid given its area.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- calculating the area of other 2D shapes,
- the units for measuring area,
- adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers within 1,000.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- areas of circles or sectors,
- areas of composite shapes,
- areas of shapes with noninteger side lengths.
