Lesson Plan: The Brain Biology

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify regions of the brain, describe their functions, and explain how to investigate brain function.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall that the brain is a major part of our central nervous system,
  • recall that the brain is responsible for conscious thought and decision making,
  • identify areas of the brain, including the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, medulla oblongata, and hypothalamus,
  • describe the functions of the different areas of the brain,
  • explain how brain function and damage can be investigated medically using MRIs, PET scans, and CT scans,
  • describe how brain and spinal cord damage can affect a person.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the fact that the brain is a major organ of the human body.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • neuroglia,
  • the lobes of the brain (frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital),
  • the structure of the spinal cord.
