Lesson Plan: Equations of Straight Lines Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the equation of a line in the form 𝑦 – 𝑦₁ = 𝑚(𝑥 – 𝑥₁) or 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 + 𝑐 = 0 given the slope and one point, or two different points, that it passes through.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- find the equation of a line in point–slope form given
- a point on the line and the slope of the line,
- two points on the line,
- find the equation of a line in general form given two points on the line,
- find the equation of a line given the slope or one point on the line and given that another point on the line is
- an - or -intercept of another line,
- the intersection point of two other lines,
- find the equation of a line that passes through the - and -intercepts of two other lines.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- finding the slope of a line between two points,
- finding the intercepts of a line,
- finding the intersection point of two lines,
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- parallel and perpendicular lines.
