This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the equation of a line in the form 𝑦 – 𝑦₁ = 𝑚(𝑥 – 𝑥₁) or 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 + 𝑐 = 0 given the slope and one point, or two different points, that it passes through.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • find the equation of a line in point–slope form (𝑦𝑦=𝑚(𝑥𝑥)) given
    • a point on the line and the slope of the line,
    • two points on the line,
  • find the equation of a line in general form (𝑎𝑥+𝑏𝑦+𝑐=0) given two points on the line,
  • find the equation of a line given the slope or one point on the line and given that another point on the line is
    • an 𝑥- or 𝑦-intercept of another line,
    • the intersection point of two other lines,
  • find the equation of a line that passes through the 𝑥- and 𝑦-intercepts of two other lines.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • finding the slope of a line between two points,
  • finding the intercepts of a line,
  • finding the intersection point of two lines,

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • parallel and perpendicular lines.
