This lesson plan includes the objectives of the lesson teaching students how to define and identify isotopes of an element, list some of their properties and uses, and calculate the relative atomic mass of an element from isotopic abundances.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define an isotope in order to identify different isotopes of an element,
- recall that elements can have many different isotopes to explain why the existence of isotopes contributes toward the relative atomic masses of some elements not being whole numbers,
- calculate the relative atomic mass of an element from the relative masses and abundances of its isotopes,
- link the chemical properties of an element to the number of electrons in the outer shell.
