This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the impedance of simple resistive-capacitive-inductive circuits using capacitive and inductive reactances.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • calculate the impedance of alternating current circuits using the formulas for capacitive and inductive reactance and combining them with the resistance of the circuit: 𝑋=1𝜔𝐶, 𝑋=𝜔𝐿, and 𝑍=𝑅+(𝑋𝑋).

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • angular frequency of an alternating current 𝜔=2𝜋𝑓,
  • capacitance,
  • inductance.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • resonant circuit frequency.
