This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify what position vectors are and write general vectors in terms of position vectors.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that a position vector 𝑂𝐴 is the vector from the origin to the point 𝐴,
  • find the position vector of a point in terms of fundamental unit vectors given the point’s coordinates,
  • understand how any vector can be drawn in terms of position vectors using a triangle with vertices at the origin and its terminal points,
  • use the formula 𝐴𝐵=𝑂𝐵𝑂𝐴 to find a vector between two points given two position vectors or vice versa,
  • find the magnitude of a position vector,
  • find expressions for the vertices of a polygon in terms of position vectors.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • vector operations in 2D,
  • finding the magnitudes of vectors.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • geometric applications of vectors (beyond simple applications of position vectors),
  • real-world applications of vectors.
