Lesson Plan: Rutherford Scattering Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the distance of closest approach between two charged objects by considering energy conservation.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall that Rutherford scattering is the elastic scattering of charged particles via the Coulomb interaction,
  • identify in diagrams which particles would be scattered the most and the least based on their paths,
  • understand how the initial speed and direction of motion of the incident particle affect how much it is deflected by,
  • use the kinetic energy of the incident particle to determine how close it will get to the target particle, using 𝑞𝑞4𝜋𝜖𝑟=12𝑚𝑣.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the idea that alpha particles consist of two protons and two neutrons,
  • the idea that electrically charged particles that are both positive will repel each other,
  • the idea that the electrostatic force between two particles depends on their charge and the distance between them,
  • using 𝐹=𝑞𝑞4𝜋𝜖𝑟,
  • using 𝐸=𝑞𝑞4𝜋𝜖𝑟,
  • using 𝐸=12𝑚𝑣.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • any other kind of scattering,
  • the wavelike nature of particles,
  • diffraction,
  • calculations of hyperbolic trajectories,
  • paths of particles incident on a lattice of nuclei.
