This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the processes of spontaneous emission of light and stimulated emission of light.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define the excited and relaxed states of a bound electron,
  • describe the interactions that occur between photons and electrons during spontaneous emission,
  • describe the interactions that occur between photons and electrons during stimulated emission,
  • recall that the phase and direction of a photon produced by stimulated emission are the same as the phase and direction of the photon that induced the emission.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • electron energy levels,
  • phase.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • lasers.
