Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the function of stem cells in plants and animals,
  • describe the potential benefits and risks of using stem cells in medicine,
  • outline how cell fractionation can be used to study the components of cells.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • cells as the basic unit of living organisms,
  • the fact that cells contain smaller components (organelles).

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the process of cell differentiation.
