Lesson Plan: Estimating Length: Customary Units

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to estimate the lengths of real-life objects by choosing the most appropriate customary unit of length.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize that a mile is a customary unit for measuring length or distance,
  • choose the most appropriate customary unit to measure the length of an object,
  • choose the most appropriate customary unit to measure the height of an object,
  • estimate the length of objects in inches, feet, yards, or miles,
  • solve simple word problems involving choosing appropriate units.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • measuring to the nearest whole, half, and quarter inch,
  • measuring in feet,
  • measuring in yards.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • converting customary units of length.
