Lesson: Measuring Volumes Physics

In this lesson, we will learn how to correctly use measuring cylinders and eureka cans to measure the volumes of liquids and objects.

Students will be able to

state which objects or instruments can be used to accurately measure the volumes of liquids (a measuring cylinder and a pipette),
use a measuring cylinder and a pipette correctly to measure the volume of a liquid,
recall what a meniscus is,
identify a concave meniscus,
identify a convex meniscus,
recall that the measurement of the volume of a liquid in a measuring cylinder should always be taken from the center of the meniscus,
identify when a measuring cylinder or a pipette has been used incorrectly to measure an angle and how,
recall that the volumes of irregular solids can be measured by measuring the volume of a liquid that they displace,
describe how a eureka can and a measuring cylinder can be used together to measure the volume of an irregular solid.
