Lesson Plan: Best Measure of Central Tendency Mathematics • 6th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to choose and evaluate the appropriate measure of the central tendency (average) of a given data set.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand the differences between the mean, median, and mode and use the differences in these values to analyze and compare the spread of the data,
- calculate the measures of central tendency of a real-world scenario and use the differences between the values to solve problems,
- understand and explain why certain measures of central tendency may not be suitable for certain data sets.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- methods of data collection,
- data sets and frequency tables,
- the measures of central tendency: mean, median, and mode.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the range of a data set.
