Lesson: Properties of Carboxylic Acids Chemistry

Students will be able to

• identify the functional group and general structure of a carboxylic acid,
• identify and name different types of carboxylic acids using classic and IUPAC nomenclature,
• describe and explain the general properties of carboxylic acids, including drawing a comparison with the equivalent alcohol,
• describe the preparation of carboxylic acids using acetic acid (ethanoic acid) and benzoic acids as case studies,
• identify and describe the structures and uses of the following carboxylic acids found in our daily lives:
  • formic acid,
  • acetic acid,
  • benzoic acid,
  • citric acid,
  • lactic acid,
  • ascorbic acid,
  • salicylic acid,
  • amino acids.
