We measure area in square units; depending on the unit used to measure the length, these could be square centimetres, square inches, square miles, or something else. We already know that the area of a rectangle can be found by counting how many unit squares compose the shape.

For example, if we have a rectangle whose length is 3 units and width is 2 units, then there are 2 groups of 3 square units, or 3 groups of 2 square units.
