Consider the shape shown. One out of blank equal parts is
shaded. And then pick the fraction that
shows how much of the shape has been shaded.
Using this shape, we need to fill
in the blank. One out of how many parts is
shaded? To answer this, we need to know how
many equal parts make up the figure: one, two, three. This shape is made up of three
equally sized rectangles. To answer this question, one out of
how many equal parts is shaded, we say one out of three.
We need to use that information to
pick the fraction that shows how much of the shape has been shaded. This fraction would be the number
of shaded parts in the numerator and the total number of parts in the
denominator. One of the rectangles is
shaded. The numerator of our fraction would
be one. The total number of rectangles is
three. The fraction that shows how much of
the shape has been shaded is one-third. One-third is answer choice c.
