Nonstandard Units of Length
In this video, we will learn how to use
real-world objects to help us measure and compare lengths.
How could we measure the length of this
spade? We could use paper clips to find out how
long the spade is. There’s one, two, three, four, five. The spade is about five paper clips
long. How long is this baseball bat? We could use cubes to measure its
length. How many cubes long is the bat? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight, nine. The baseball bat measures nine cubes
long. Let’s practice using everyday objects to
help us measure length.
Using paper clips as units of
measurement, how long are the scissors?
In this question, we have to measure the
length of the pair of scissors, and we’re told to use paper clips as our unit of
measurement. So, we need to measure the scissors using
paper clips. To find the length of the scissors, we
need to count the number of paper clips. One, two, three, four. The scissors are four paper clips
long.
Olivia is measuring items with square
units. Count to find the missing number. The pencil is what units long.
In this question, Olivia is using squares
or square units to measure her pencil. To help us find out the length of the
pencil, we have to count the number of square units. Let’s count. One, two, three, four, five, six,
seven. We counted the number of square
units.
The pencil is seven square units
long.
Is the pen longer or shorter than the
pencil?
In this question, we’re being asked to
compare the length of a pen and a pencil. And we’re given a paper clip to use as
our unit of measurement. This means we need to measure the pen and
the pencil using paper clips. First, let’s measure the length of the
pencil. How many paper clips long is it? The pencil is about five paper clips
long. And the pen is almost seven paper clips,
or about seven paper clips long. Seven is greater than five. So, the pen is longer than the
pencil.
Madison is measuring her toys with unit
squares. Pick the toy that is eight units
long.
Madison is measuring her doll and her
train, and she’s using squares to help her measure. Which of her toys is eight units
long? Is it her doll or her train? How many squares long is Madison’s
doll? It’s four square units long. How long is her train? Eight square units long. This is the toy we’re looking for. This is the toy that is eight units
long.
What have we learned in this video? We’ve learned how to use nonstandard
units of measurement to measure length. And we’ve learned that we can use
real-world objects such as cubes or paper clips as units of measurement.
