Making Two-Digit Numbers with Tens
and Ones
In this video, we will learn how to
use place value equipment to make two-digit numbers with tens and ones. The number 33 is a two-digit
number. Two-digit numbers have a tens digit
and a ones digit. The tens digit in the number 33 is
worth three 10s. We can show this using three 10s
blocks. 10s blocks are made using 10
bricks. To show three 10s, we need three
10s blocks.
The number 33 has three ones. We can show this using three ones
bricks. Three 10s are 30. 10, 20, 30. And our three ones blocks are worth
three. So, we can model the number 33
using three 10s blocks, which are worth 30, and our three ones. 30 and three makes 33. 10, 20, 30, 31, 32, 33. Let’s practice using place value
equipment to make two-digit numbers with tens and ones.
What is the number? 45, nine, or 54.
To help us find the number, we need
to count the number of 10s and ones it has. Let’s start by counting the number
of 10s. One, two, three, four. So, we need to write the digit four
in the tens place. Now, let’s count the ones. One, two, three, four, five. So, we need to write our five digit
in the ones place. Which two-digit number have we
made? 45, nine, or 54? It’s number 45.
Four 10s are worth 40. 10, 20, 30, 40. And five ones are five. 40 plus five makes 45. The number is number 45.
Find the missing part. Is it five, 50, or eight?
We’re shown a part–whole model. The number 85 is the whole
number. It’s a two-digit number. It has a tens digit and a ones
digit. This part of the number is the tens
part. The number 85 has eight 10s. We can model eight 10s using eight
10s blocks. Let’s count in 10s. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80. The eight digit in the number 85 is
worth 80. And the five digit in the number 85
is worth five ones. 80 plus five is 85.
The missing part of the number is
five. 85 has eight 10s, which are worth
80, and five ones.

has a seven digit, which is its tens digit. We might think that the missing
number is seven, but it’s not. We have to think about what seven
