Lesson Plan: Complements of a Set
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find complements of sets and use them to solve problems involving the union and intersection of sets.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define the complement of a set as the set of all objects in the universal set not belonging to the set,
- use the notation and to represent the complement of sets,
- identify the complements of sets using the listing and description methods,
- use Venn diagrams to identify the complements of sets,
- determine the union and intersection of a set and its complement.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- how to express sets using the listing and description methods,
- how to represent sets using Venn diagrams,
- Intersections, unions, and subsets of sets,
- the universal and empty sets.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the difference between two sets,
- the sets , , , and ,
- negative numbers, fractions, and decimals,
- evaluating algebraic expressions.
