Lesson Plan: Independent Events Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to determine whether two events are independent and compute probabilities involving independent events.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- determine whether two given events are independent given a context,
- use the multiplication rule to find probabilities involving independent events,
- determine whether two given events are independent given a Venn diagram,
- determine whether two given events are independent when sufficient, but not direct, information is provided,
- find all possible values to complete a Venn diagram given that the two events are independent.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- probability,
- computing the probability assuming equally likely outcomes,
- mutually exclusive events,
- addition and the general addition rule,
- the complement rule.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- conditional probability,
- tree diagrams,
- computing probabilities involving dependent events.
