Lesson Plan: Writing Algebraic Expressions Mathematics • 6th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to read and write algebraic expressions, model them, and apply this to real-life situations.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- write an algebraic expression using one or more operations, including
- addition,
- subtraction,
- multiplication,
- division,
- exponentiation,
- write an algebraic expression to represent
- a given word problem,
- a given description of a real-world system,
- simple properties of a geometric figure, such as the area or the perimeter,
- a given diagram, such as a bar model.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponentiation of rational numbers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- algebraic expressions with more than 3 variables,
- algebraic equations,
- simplifying algebraic expressions.
