Lesson Plan: Solving Systems of Quadratic Equations
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find values that satisfy two quadratic equations in two variables simultaneously.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- solve a system of quadratic equations by rearranging the equation into a single quadratic equation and verify the solution to a system of quadratic equations by substitution,
- show that a given system of quadratic equations has no solutions, one solution, two solutions, or an infinite number of solutions,
- find the solution to a system of two quadratic equations from their graphs.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- solving a system of linear–quadratic equations,
- solving quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula,
- solving equations graphically.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- quadratic equations in more than two variables,
- discriminants.
