Lesson Plan: Measuring to the Nearest Inch
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use a ruler to measure the lengths of objects to the nearest inch.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- measure the length and height of an object to the nearest inch by looking for the halfway mark and recognizing which whole number the measure is closest to,
- use a ruler to find the length and height of an object to the nearest inch,
- solve simple word problems involving measuring to the nearest inch.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- recognizing that we measure from 0 on a ruler,
- measuring the length and height of objects in whole numbers only.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- measuring to the nearest half inch,
- measuring to the nearest quarter inch,
- adding and subtracting measurements in inches.
