Lesson Plan: Area: Standard Units Mathematics • 3rd Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to count unit squares to measure the area of rectilinear shapes in square centimeters, square meters, square inches, or square feet.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- count whole and half squares to find the area of a shape given the measure of the unit square,
- use the notation cm2, m2, ft2, and in2 for these units,
- compare the areas of shapes measured in the same units.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the definition of area,
- nonstandard units of area,
- calculating area by counting whole and half squares,
- multiplying numbers within the times tables up to .
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- approximating the area of shapes,
- calculating the area of shapes with curved edges,
- reading and writing decimal numbers,
- reading and writing mixed numbers,
- converting and equating different units of measurement (e.g., ),
- comparing areas measured in different units.
