Lesson Plan: Land Habitats
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify different land-based habitats and describe their importance for living things.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define what habitats are and why they are important for living things,
- understand that habitats vary in size,
- identify and compare different types of land habitats, including grasslands, forests, deserts, and arctic tundras,
- understand what is meant by the term diverse with respect to habitats,
- understand that living things are adapted for the habitats they live in,
- recognize examples of these adaptations.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the idea that living things need nutrients, water, and space to live and to grow,
- the basic structure of a plant (particularly the leaves),
- the names of some common animals,
- the appearances of some common animals.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- water habitats.
