Lesson Plan: Arc Length of Parametric Curves Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use integration to find the arc length of a parametrically defined curve.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- know the formula for the arc length of a curve given parametrically,
- use integration to find the arc lengths of parametric curves.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- parametric curves in two dimensions,
- derivatives of parametric equations,
- finding arc lengths of explicitly defined curves by integration,
- integration of polynomial, trigonometric, and exponential functions,
- integration by substitution,
- integration by parts.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- planar motion using parametric equations.
