Lesson Plan: Dividing Four-Digit Numbers by One-Digit Numbers with Remainders
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use short division to divide numbers with four digits by one-digit numbers when there is a remainder.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand how remainders are represented by models (part–whole models and place value counters) when modeling divisions of four-digit numbers by single digits,
- use the written short division method to divide four-digit numbers by single digits when there is a remainder.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- using place value counters to model divisions,
- interpreting remainders according to the contexts of problems,
- extending known multiplication facts up to to related facts involving multiples of 10 and 100.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- dividing by two-digit numbers,
- representing remainders as fractions or decimals.
