Lesson Plan: Fractions Greater Than One
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use models to explain how an improper fraction can be decomposed into a number of wholes and remaining parts and write improper fractions as mixed numbers.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand that a fraction greater than 1 has a numerator that is greater than its denominator,
- understand that fractions greater than 1 can be partitioned into a number of parts and wholes,
- write and model fractions equal to whole numbers,
- write and model mixed numbers,
- write and model improper fractions.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the roles of the numerator and the denominator in a fraction,
- fraction values up to and including 1 whole.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- fractions with denominators greater than 12,
- simplifying fractions,
- modeling improper fractions and mixed numbers on number lines.
