Lesson Plan: Perimeters of Rectangles with the Same Area Mathematics • 3rd Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to draw rectangles with the same area using unit squares, count to find their perimeters, and compare these perimeters.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recognize that rectangles can have the same area but different dimensions and perimeters,
- compare the perimeters of rectangles with the same area but different dimensions,
- explain the difference in perimeter between rectangles with the same area,
- construct different rectangles with the same area.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- how to calculate the area and perimeter of rectangles using square centimeters.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the formulas for calculating perimeter or area,
- the notation used for square units of measurement,
- rectangles with decimal measurements for length or width.
