Lesson Plan: Real-World Applications of Derivatives
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to apply the power, product, quotient, and chain rules for differentiation to business, economics, management sciences, social sciences, and life sciences.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use the power, product, quotient, and chain rules for differentiation to solve real-world problems in business, economics, management sciences, social sciences, and life sciences.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the power rule for derivatives,
- the product rule for derivatives,
- the quotient rule for derivatives,
- the chain rule for derivatives,
- differentiating different types of functions (polynomial, trigonometric, exponential, logarithmic, inverse trigonometric, and hyperbolic functions).
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- optimization,
- extreme values,
- concavity and points of inflection,
- differential equations.
