Lesson Plan: Structure of the Stem Biology
This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to describe the basic structure of a plant stem and recall the functions of different parts of the stem.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe the structure of a dicot stem, including the epidermis, starch sheath, cortex, pericycle, vascular bundles, cambium, pith, and medullary rays,
- recall where parenchyma and collenchyma cells are found within the stem,
- explain the need for vascular bundles within stems to transport substances via phloem and xylem tissue.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the basic structure of a plant (stem, leaves, branches, and roots),
- the fact that plants require water and minerals to survive.
