Lesson Plan: Multiplying Polynomials Using Area Models
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use area models to multiply polynomials.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand how to represent a product of monic linear polynomials using an area model,
- understand how to represent a product of nonmonic linear polynomials using an area model,
- determine whether an identity is correct by multiplying polynomials using an area model,
- find an unknown value in an equation involving the product of polynomials using an area model.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the distributive property,
- multiplying monomials.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- multiplying polynomials of degree 2 or above,
- other methods of multiplying polynomials.
