Lesson Plan: Intersection of Sets
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the intersection of two or more sets and model this using Venn diagrams.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recognize that the intersection of a number of sets is all the elements that are shared between those sets,
- use the notation to denote the intersection of sets,
- use Venn diagrams to model the intersection of two or more sets,
- determine the intersection of two or more sets using the listing or description methods,
- recognize that equals .
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- using the listing method and the description method to express sets,
- using Venn diagrams to model sets.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the union of sets,
- the difference between sets,
- the complement of a set,
- universal sets,
- the sets , , , and ,
- negative numbers, fractions, and decimals,
- evaluating algebraic expressions.
