Lesson Plan: Dividing Polynomials by Monomials Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to divide polynomials by monomials.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- divide a polynomial by a monomial, including the following:
- single variable monomials and polynomials,
- single variable monomials and multivariable polynomials,
- multivariable monomials and polynomials,
- simplify an expression involving the division of a polynomial by a monomial,
- find unknowns by dividing a polynomial by a monomial and then by comparing them with the final simplified expression,
- solve applied problems using the division of a polynomial by a monomial, including the following:
- word problems,
- geometric problems.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- writing algebraic expressions,
- simplifying expressions by combining like terms,
- dividing monomials using the quotient rule,
- the distributive property,
- multiplying monomials with algebraic expressions.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- dividing polynomials by another polynomial of order two or higher.
