Lesson Plan: Photochemical Reactions Chemistry
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe photochemical reactions and their role in processes such as photographic development, photosynthesis, and ozone destruction.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define what a photochemical reaction is,
- describe the uses of photochemistry (e.g., photography and photosynthesis),
- understand the role photochemistry plays in ozone formation and destruction and the reaction equations involved,
- describe physical and experimental observations in the context of photoreactivity (e.g., bubbles of oxygen produced by plants and photographic development),
- write or balance ionic equations for simple photochemical reactions (e.g., breaking of bonds and conversion of to ).
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- ionic equations,
- redox reactions.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- mechanisms of photosynthesis and photography in detail,
- detailed descriptions of the reactions in ozone formation, photography, and so on,
- photoexcited and photodynamic processes.
