Worksheet: Tests for Anions

In this worksheet, we will practice describing the use of acid–base and precipitation reactions to test for the presence of nitrates, sulfates, and carbonates.

When 0.4550 g of a solid sample containing magnesium sulfate is dissolved in an aqueous solution of excess barium nitrate, 0.6168 g of barium sulfate precipitates. Calculate, to 3 significant figures, the mass of magnesium sulfate in the sample as a percentage of the total sample mass.
