Which of the following lists states
the classes of the Protozoa phylum? (A) Sarcodina, Ciliophora,
Flagellata, and Sporozoa. (B) Flagellata, Zygomycota,
Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota. (C) Sporozoa, Archaebacteria, and
Eubacteria. Or (D) Ciliophora, Rhodophyta,
Chlorophyta, and Tracheophyta.
In 1969, a scientist called
Whittaker proposed a classification system that divided living organisms into five
kingdoms. These kingdoms were Plantae,
Animalia, Fungi, Monera, and Protista. Each of these kingdoms can be
further divided into smaller groups. The kingdom Protista, for example,
can be further divided into the phyla Protozoa, Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta, and
Pyrrophyta.
Our question asks us about the
Protozoa phylum and the classes it contains. The different protozoans are
classified based primarily on the organisms’ modes of locomotion. The classes of the Protozoa phylum
include Sarcodina, Ciliophora, Flagellata, and Sporozoa. Organisms within the class
Sarcodina move using pseudopodia, which are temporary extensions of the cell. Ciliophora move using tiny,
hairlike cilia surrounding the cell. Flagellata use appendages called
flagella to move. Sporozoa, on the other hand, do not
have any specialized appendages for movement. This means that we have found the
correct answer to this question.
The answer option that lists the
classes of the Protozoa phylum is (A): Sarcodina, Ciliophora, Flagellata, and
Sporozoa.
