When William went grocery shopping in the afternoon, the clock looked like this. What time did he go grocery shopping?

This is the hour hand. It’s pointing between the numbers three and four. This means that it’s after three o’clock. This is the minute hand. It tells us how many minutes after three o’clock it is. If the minute hand was pointing to 12, it would be three o’clock or three and no minutes. If the minute hand was pointing to number one, it would be 3:05 or five minutes passed three.

When the minute hand points to number two, it’s 3:10 or 10 minutes passed three. We’re counting the minutes in fives. Zero, five, 10, 15, 20. The clock is showing 3:20 or 20 minutes passed three. The question tells us that William went shopping in the afternoon. That means he went grocery shopping at 3:20 p.m.
